Mishaps and Memories
Last modified: November 17, 2010It’s not the destination where you end up,
. . . . . . . . . but the mishaps and memories you create along the way.
We have been camping in one form another since we were married in 1970. Â Our camping experiences span just about everything from backpacking in to remote sites, car camping, a truck and camper, a Volkswagen Westfalia, a tiny tear drop trailer, and currently a 2003 Winnebago Rialta HD which is built on a Volkswagen Eurovan Chassis.
Over the years we experienced a lot of different situations, but it’s often the mishaps that leave the most lasting memories.  For example  I remember when the our 1970 truck broke down in Bakersfield, CA and we had to wait several days for parts.  Or when we left Alaska in mid September of 1995 in the 1985 Westfalia and almost made it to the Yukon border before the transmission decided it wasn’t going to make the trip.  We had to return to Anchorage and wait another week for parts and repair. By the time we started out again the snows had come and we drove almost the whole trip to Olympia in the snow!
This isn’t to say that all our memories are of mishaps. We have some very fond memories as well. I particularly remember the great ski weekends we had with the truck and camper parked in the ski resort parking lot in sub freezing temps; the great times we’ve had tent camping with our kids as they grew up, or an extended backpacking adventure Colleen had with our son in Yosemite when he was 16. Oh the adventures we’ve had! Â We only wish we had documented them better in the old days.
But now we have digital photos and the Internet; along with free blogging software, so there is no excuse not to record some of our adventures.  That’s what this blog will be about – the mishaps and memories of camping trips we take around the country.  Check the menu to the right for current articles or subscribe to our RSS feed to always stay up with our journals.
